BCDC currently operates the before and after school programs at the following schools in the Appoquinimink School District: Silver Lake Elementary, Spring Meadow Early Childhood Center, Old State Elementary, Townsend Elementary and Townsend Early Childhood Center. The school age programs utilize the School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale (SACERS) in order to provide quality programs because considering that our school-age child care programs enroll children from 5-12 years of age, it is essential to offer activities that meet the widely differing needs and interests of children over a 7 year age span. In order to accomplish this task the school-age programs use the SACERS criteria for developmental appropriateness for the program components. Quality indicators guide the program components and are based on research so that they reflect current ideas of what should be done in school-age child care programs to meet the developmental needs of children ages 5-12. The indicators are grouped under 6 subscales that include: space and furnishings, health and safety, activities, interactions, program structure, and staff development.
